We were excited to see that Katadyn brought the BeFree out in two larger volume bottle sizes. This time around, we took the 3-liter version out for a test drive. It is still so light and compact; it is a no-brainer to throw it in your pack and pull it out when you come across a water source and want instant drinking water (and now it’s easy to filter some for your friends, too). The downfall of the BeFree is its delicate Hydraflask bottle. We were disappointed to discover a pinhole in our three-liter flask on day one of our backpacking trip. Unfortunately, we could not use it for fear of getting dirty water in our clean bottles. If you’re interested in something that offers a higher level of durable, the MSR TrailShot not only fits the bill but allows you to drink directly from the water source.
