The Osprey Mutant 52 is the largest in the Mutant pack series and a celebrated edition. Industry-wide, the 50-liter range of packs is woefully lacking with models we have been psyched on — most notably for a lack in carrying comfort. This size range of packs either compromises on carrying comfort with heavy loads or feels awkward when pared down for the summit push. But with the Mutant 52, Osprey took what we loved about the 38 and scaled it up for those climbs where you just need a little more gear or a few more warm layers. If we didn’t also have the 38, we might not notice that the 52 felt a bit more cumbersome on summit day, but for the size, it climbs remarkably well.
