The stripped-down, bare-bones, practical Hanes sun-shirt is worth every bit of its sub-$10 price tag. While the fit wasn’t on point after laundering, the FreshIQ® CoolDRI® fabric is spot-on, drying quickly, stopping the stink, and making for a perfect every-day running shirt. It lacks quite a few features of its more outdoor-oriented brethren in this test, such as a hood, longer hem, or any form of a pocket. Thus, it may not be found under a backpack above treeline but could make a great post-hike throw-on at camp, and it’s decent for summer runs and gym workouts. There’s ample stretch and it feels good to wear despite the fit, but sunscreen would be a necessity on the hands, neck, and face, so this shirt certainly doesn’t totally eliminate the need to lather up. So, in terms of sun protection, it’s not much more effective than a cotton t-shirt. However, if Hanes decides to put a hood on this and maybe some thumb-loops, it would become a better alternative to the Columbia PFG Terminal Tackle Hoodie.
