The Black Diamond Alpine Start is a jacket built for fast and light adventures. It is the most breathable jacket we tested and is a perfect piece if you need a lightweight jacket that’ll slow down the wind on your next cold weather run or summer alpine climb. In fact, this jacket is so light that you can barely tell it’s there. Unfortunately, you can also barely tell it’s there when you get caught in a rain storm. The Alpine Start is best used in dry conditions when you’re working hard and when you use it in conjunction with an insulated jacket. It fell behind the Best Buy winning Outdoor Research Ferrosi Hooded because it was less weather resistant and wasn’t quite as mobile. Further, the Start feels less durable. Overall, the Alpine Start is a great jacket if you want to shave every last ounce and need a jacket that breathes extremely well.
