The Helly Hansen Enigma is an immaculately built, highly-insulated, conservatively styled ski jacket. We found it to be very warm, very comfortable and highly protective from wind and precipitation. The features are many and a bit complicated and the venting system is good in theory but falls short in reality. The Enigma is slightly warmer than our Editors’ Choice Arc’teryx Macai and similar in insulation to our Best Buy pick. At this price point, the difference in price between the Macai and the Enigma is virtually a wash, but the Macai comes out on top with better weather-proofing and a greater percentage of durable down insulation. The Enigma meets spendy expectations with tight construction and luxuriously textured fabrics, and exceeds those expectations with handy features and bonafide weather-proofing.
