Marmot has long had our respect for holding down the market on their PreCip, a remarkably affordable rain shell that performs well in a variety of environments. The Eclipse, however, is not up to this thematic standard. The outer material is nice and durable, but the inner material feels clammy and does not breathe as well as we would like for a jacket that costs $250. The features make it look like it would be adequate for mountain use but ultimately are abbreviated in ways that end up being frustrating, such as the pit zips with a single, one-way zipper so you can’t adjust how big and where exactly you ventilate. This jacket has potential, but we don’t think it should be more than double the price of the PreCip in its current state.
