The Outdoor Research Ghost is a rain hat that converts into a sun hat when the Gore-Tex rain flap is tucked away to reveal a mesh front crown. While it didn’t take top marks in any category, it performed fairly well across the board, and for day hikers or boaters who plan on recreating in mixed weather, this could be a great choice. We appreciated this hat’s wide protective brim and classic style, and found it to be breathable enough in the sun while offering excellent protection in rain. However, this hat isn’t at all crushable, and it’s hard to wear with a loaded backpack. For an option that offers even more sun protection and can be worn comfortably with a pack, the cape-style Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure is the way to go. Those looking for a super packable hat should check out the full-brim Filson Summer Packer or the Outdoor Research Helios.
