These bindings, especially as compared to the vast majority of what people are using, are ridiculously light. Functionality is limited, but they successfully do the most important jobs of a backcountry ski binding. The Plum Tech Race 150 securely holds your toe to the ski in tour mode (sometimes too securely. See below for a story of a boot stuck in a tested version of this binding) and switches to hold your entire foot for downhill skiing. It’s that simple. Others do these jobs with more sophistication. The downhill performance of, say, the Top Pick Fritschi Tecton, at least in higher speed settings, is definitely better than that of the Plum Race. The brakes and heel lifters of the Editors Choice Atomic Backland Tour make them more suited to both all-around skiing and to beginner to intermediate use. For advanced backcountry skiers, the Race 150 should be high on the list. The Race 150 is matched in function and weight and slightly exceeded in terms of reliability by the Black Diamond Helio 180. For this reason, we grant the Helio our Top Pick award. Otherwise, they are very comparable.
