The Scarpa Crux is a rough-and-tough, do-it-all workhorse of an approach shoe at a great price point. It has a narrow toe box, sticky leather for excellent climbing ability, and a cushioned leather upper and stiff sole for plenty of support. Great construction quality means the shoe should last longer than other majority-mesh options we tested. The thinner sole and stiff leather leave something to be desired for comfort when hiking long distances, and it’s not the lightest shoe on the market. But the Crux is still the best approach shoe that budget-minded climbers can buy. To see how it stacks up versus the competition, see our review on the best approach shoes.
